Countries throughout the world have many different telephone wall sockets, many of which are unique to a specific country. These differences in size shape and wiring will prevent your standard USA phone plug on your laptop computer modem ( which is referred to as RJ-11 ) from working without an international telephone adapter plug. These foreign phone adapter plugs are used to connect between your American modem cable and the foreign telephone wall socket.

Most of these adapter plugs contain a second female socket (duplex) to be used for connecting the foreign voice telephone in parallel with your notebook or PDA modem. This duplex feature enables you to simultaneously connect your modem and the local telephone to one line which makes it easier to make your connections through the local phone service if necessary. Furthermore you can now use either connection without switching telephone lines.
